What is Food Adventures?
Food Adventures is a hands-on nutrition education program designed specifically for children. The goal of the program is to allow children to develop a healthy relationship with food by preparing meals through an interactive, fun, and peer-supportive approach. We want to inspire kids to be more adventurous with new tastes and new foods, and give them food preparation skills they can use throughout their lives. In addition to reinforcing the standard Core curriculum (via math, science, language, literacy and culture), Food Adventures teaches children about nutrition, local food production, balanced food choices, and kitchen safety. This experiential program makes conceptual nutrition education come to life and empowers children to make healthier lifestyle choices.
Why Food Adventures?
Food Adventures is not just a nutrition education program, it is a form of preventative medicine and additional academic support. The Nutrition Center realizes the importance of children understanding the relationship between diet and health. Future eating patterns and behaviors are developed throughout the critical ages of 5 through 18. Furthermore, as a population heavily targeted by processed food marketing efforts, children are at great risk of developing unhealthy eating habits that carry into adulthood. This is precisely why nutrition education programs such as Food Adventures need to be developed and implemented for the school-age population.
