The Nutrition Center provides individual and group/family cooking classes for children and adults at community sites throughout Berkshire County including the Christian Center, AdLib, and other temporary housing and community gathering sites. As part of TNC’s annual appeal we are ramping up efforts and expanding our programming at Berkshire Children and Families’ Redfield House, a residential home for adolescent single mothers and their young children. These young families represent the most vulnerable sector of the population, and TNC’s Fresh Start cooking classes are bringing nutrition awareness, grocery budgeting and other medical professionals to young mothers to impact the health outcomes of two generations. TNC is currently working on a program to provide staple foods (thanks to Guido’s Fresh Marketplace) with budget plans to help individuals to break the cycle of buying processed foods. This plan involves guiding shoppers to direct their SNAP, WIC and other resources to purchasing vegetables and other fresh, whole foods and then cooking these foods (such as bulk legumes, whole grains fresh vegetables, spices, herbs) on-site.
